Synopsis: Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing follows Hank Thompson (Casey Affleck), a New York City drifter whose life is upended when he stumbles into a violent conflict with gangsters. As the body count rises and the boozing continues, the film delves into a surprisingly humanistic and philosophical exploration of morality, redemption, and the search for meaning in a brutal world. Along the way, Hank's journey becomes intertwined with a new love interest, Lucy (Zoe Kravitz), and the charismatic but dangerous gangster Billy (Matt Smith).
Review: There's so much death in Caught Stealing it can be easy to forget just how funny Darren Aronofsky's latest feature is. It's a film interested in morality, exploring both conventional binaries of good and bad, and those more opaque, like the unspoken codes of conduct that exist between the film's warring parties. What’s better is that it's also very entertaining, a quality Aronofsky's films sometimes struggle with, too often caught up in their own academic conquests. Caught Stealing delivers on both angles. If I have a central criticism, it's that the film builds some convenient plot armor in its final third, making the fate of protagonist Hank feel a little too contrived. Yet, in the hands of an often agnostic filmmaker like Aronofsky, Hank's redemption can't help but feel religious, showing that even at his most accessible, he's still wrestling with themes of faith and the search for profound meaning.
