Synopsis: Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return to their iconic post-apocalyptic world almost three decades after the Rage virus outbreak. The film follows a family—father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), mother Isla (Jodie Comer), and son Spike (Alfie Williams)—living within a tightly-knit, conservative northern English community on Holy Island. When a need arises to return to the perilous mainland, Spike is forced to navigate the evolving horrors of the infected world, testing the bond between all three.

Review: Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later marks an impressive return to the series, particularly in its first half. The film boasts a strong visual language, blending frenetic, off-kilter editing with archival footage and North East England scenery, effectively portraying a society grounded in conservative ideals yet shaped by the viral apocalypse. The relationship between Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams is truly a brilliantly flawed relationship, a testament to Boyle's direction in capturing this northern community. While the premise for venturing to the mainland felt occasionally contrived, it ultimately supports the core narrative of the young protagonist's journey to manhood, navigating a world of both familial bonds and mutated threats. The depiction of the infected, though at times less terrifying, presents an interesting evolution from Alex Garland. Despite some tonal shifts and odd ending scenes hinting at future instalments, it remains a solid return to this world, building a compelling, post-catastrophe reality.
