Synopsis: Fleeing the devastation of post-war Europe, Jewish-Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor L谩szl贸 T贸th (Adrien Brody) arrives in America with his resilient wife Erzs茅bet (Felicity Jones), hoping to rebuild their lives. Their journey to achieve the American Dream takes an unforeseen turn when L谩szl贸’s architectural genius catches the eye of the formidable industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce), thrusting them into a complex and often violent world.
Review: Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist is an ambitious cinematic achievement, confidently wearing its grand aspirations on its sleeve. This is particularly evident through Daniel Blumberg's epic score, which weaves seamlessly into both the film's sweeping moments and the quiet, initial insights into L谩szl贸’s character. Adrien Brody's superb performance captures not only the ambition of our protagonist but also vulnerability, and a subtle fear of what his achievements might bring. This nuanced portrayal serves as a foil to Guy Pearce's equally brilliant work as Harrison Lee Van Buren, a character who embodies an overconfident arrogance, starkly contrasting L谩szl贸's quiet self-assurance. The palpable power struggle between these two distinct figures makes for incredibly engaging viewing. The Brutalist is a work that doesn't just tell a story but feels like a lived experience, using the whole director’s toolkit — performance, sound, runtime — to elevate the film beyond a simple narrative into a visceral, immersive experience.
