Review: Edward Berger's Conclave is a thrilling drama that unfolds with an almost operatic grandeur. Conclave immerses viewers in the hallowed halls of the Sistine Chapel, but the film is just as concerned with human morality and power as it is with the nuances of the Catholic electorate. Berger masterfully captures the atmosphere of secrecy and intrigue, with the cinematography emphasising the architectural prowess of the Vatican, its corridors like a stage for high-stakes political maneuvering. Ralph Fiennes deserves a lot of recognition for his emphatic performance as Cardinal Lomeli, the film's moral compass and often the point of view through which viewers see the events play out. The supporting cast, including Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, is equally impressive. While Conclave may occasionally veer into the realm of high drama, hyperbolising the election with large dramatic brushstrokes, it's also devilishly entertaining and should rightfully command attention at this year’s Academy Awards.
