Review:
Megalopolis is a deeply pretentious film that fails to deliver on its lofty ambitions. While visually inspired at times, the narrative is consistently muddled, jumping erratically between timelines and half-baked ideas. The performances are a mixed bag to say the least, with some actors clearly struggling to make sense of their thinly-drawn characters. Adam Driver, usually a compelling screen presence, seems lost and confused as Cesar, while Jon Voight delivers a scenery-chewing, almost parodic performance that undermines any dramatic weight. The film's pervasive cynicism is a headache too; every character is portrayed as selfish and corrupt, leaving viewers with no one to root for. The apparent message, hammered home relentlessly, seems to be that humanity is fundamentally doomed without a messianic artist who can build a mega city. Overall, 'Megalopolis' is a disappointing and frustrating mess from a once-great director—a film full of sound and fury, ultimately signifying nothing.
