Review: Sing Sing is a quietly subversive 'prison' film that focuses on the humanity within the prison walls. It doesn't foreground the shared knowledge of prison life – the violence, the hierarchies – as much as it lets these elements simmer alongside the film's true focus: the Sing Sing program and its contributors. Colman Domingo is magnetic as Divine G, the drama instructor guiding the inmates with compassion. His performance is understated yet powerful, conveying his dedication and empathy. Opposite Domingo, Clarence Maclin is the perfect foil. A rugged, rhinoceros of a man, Maclin's tough exterior masks his hope and yearning for change. With a supporting cast almost entirely made up of real ex-convicts, Sing Sing achieves a level of natural realism that is both authentic and deeply affecting. The film never shies away from the harsh realities of prison life, but it also illuminates the transformative power of art and human connection.
