Review:
Lanthimos is no stranger to absurdist cinema, and Kinds of Kindness is no exception. With its sterile visuals, deadpan humour and detached characters, the film delves into the thorny philosophical questions surrounding human behaviour and societal expectations. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons deliver mesmerising performances as their respective characters across this anthology film, particularly, Plemons in the first story and Stone in the third. The film's stark aesthetic and sparse dialogue amplify the tension and invite viewers to confront their own preconceived notions about kindness and human connection. However, while Kinds of Kindness is undoubtedly a visually striking and thought-provoking film, it feels hollow. The characters, while well-acted, remain ciphers, their motivations and backstories shrouded in the kind of obtuseness that alienates rather than engages. Kinds of Kindness is, fundamentally, a film that will divide audiences; how much you ‘enjoy’ it depends on your appetite and, often, patience for absurdity.
