Joined by aspiring photojournalist Jessie Cullen (Cailee Spaeny) and Lee’s mentor Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), they navigate a treacherous landscape of guerrilla warfare, mass graves and shifting allegiances.
Review: Civil War is an intense dystopian film that immerses viewers in a fractured and hostile landscape. Director Alex Garland’s command of the action sequences is particularly impressive, plunging audiences into the guerrilla-style warfare between inhabitants. Garland’s interest in human evolution and nature's omnipresent role throughout human decline is a prevalent theme in his work and is brought to the forefront here through the use of haunting wide shots of a forgotten America. That being said, the film’s most impressive element is not its visuals, but its sound design, which resonates with the same breakneck intensity as the narrative itself. The urgent and disturbing gunshots, coupled with the effective use of silence in moments of loss, create a deeply affective and visceral soundscape. Slated to be Garland's final film as a director, Civil War is a testament to his craft, delivering an unflinching exploration of a nation torn apart by conflict.
