Review:
The Meg 2 surprisingly delivers a more thrilling shark tale than its predecessor. Jason Statham slips back into the role of Jonas Taylor like a familiar wetsuit, bringing his gruff charisma to the underwater rescue diver. This time the peril is more immediate, with smarter directing choices ratcheting up the aquatic tension straight away. Wheatley’s film occupies the quick swim lane with ease, as The Meg 2 moves briskly between underwater crises and shark attacks. The CGI sharks remain impressive, though at times too obviously computer-generated to truly terrify. That being said, the sequel supplies much enjoyable marine action, with a more rounded cast to occupy those non-Statham scenes. For a sequel that could have felt like a cash grab, The Meg 2 is an unexpected improvement that injects more thrills and fun into the franchise. It won’t win over new fans, but for meg enthusiasts, it’s sure to satisfy.
