Synopsis: Oppenheimer dramatises the life of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), known as the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role leading the Manhattan Project. As a young physicist at the University of California Berkeley in the 1930s, Oppenheimer (Murphy) is recruited to work on developing an atomic weapon. At the secret Los Alamos laboratory, Oppenheimer leads a team of scientists including Edward Teller (Benny Safdie), Robert Serber (Josh Hartnett) and Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt), his wife. Haunted by the destruction he helps unleash on Japan to end WWII, Oppenheimer struggles with guilt over creating the bomb.

Review: Christopher Nolan's first biopic is an intense and thought-provoking drama that transports the director’s recurrent themes of time and power onto the complex life of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy delivers a powerful performance as the enigmatic scientist, portraying Oppenheimer as a conflicted genius who is haunted by the devastating weapon he helped create. The film doesn't shy away from the controversial aspects of Oppenheimer's story but it also humanises him, showing his passion for physics and the troubled relationships that punctuated much of his life. Visually stunning cinematography and an ominous score by Ludwig GΓΆransson captures 1940s Los Alamos in an authentic yet altogether stylised lens. Nolan takes some risks with the unconventional structure which doesn't always work — the film’s pacing trailing a bit after the bomb test — but overall 'Oppenheimer' is a riveting character study and, ultimately, succeeds in provoking those profound questions about human morality and scientific responsibility.
