Directors: Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson and Kemp Powers
Review: This dazzling sequel builds on the energy of its predecessor. The animation is rich, detailed and dizzyingly dynamic. The story is a myriad of ideas and canonised references, which at times clouds our focus, but never fully takes us away from the web-slinging action and emotional stakes. Animation is, of course, crucial to this engagement and what makes the film such a visual feast is the way it interpolates its graphic references. Each spiderperson is crafted with the nuance worthy of their own standalone film; every landscape through which Miles and Gwen swing occupies a dynamism which commands attention. So while the plot is dense and detailed to an almost overwhelming degree, it never loses sight of the human heart of the story. Miles's journey of self-discovery is both relatable and inspiring, and the film's notions of realising identity and responsibility are sure to resonate long after its tense finale.
