Synopsis: Glass Onion is a standalone sequel to the 2019 film Knives Out, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as master detective Benoit Blanc as he takes on a new case revolving around tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) and his closest friends. The ensemble cast also includes Janelle MonΓ‘e, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista. The film follows Blanc as he is invited to Greece to investigate the death of a young woman at a party hosted by Bron. As he interviews the suspects, Blanc soon realises that nothing is as it seems and that the truth may be more complicated than he first thought.
Review: Glass Onion is a largely enjoyable sequel that isn’t afraid to lean into the peculiarities of its plot. Much like its predecessor, the performances are what really binds together the ridiculousness. Rian Jonson has clearly made efforts to bring even more life into his ensemble cast this time round, with well wrought performances from new additions such as Edward Norton, Janelle Monae and Madelyn Cline. In the plot too, there are plenty of twists and turns to enjoy. However, as the film surpasses the two-hour mark, the enjoyment becomes contingent on the complexity of these plot shifts. This is not necessarily a negative aspect, as each twist adds an element of mystery and intrigue. However, there are instances where the film's cleverness detracts from its overall impact, making it feel overly self-indulgent. As a result, much like its eponymous title, Glass Onion is best appreciated as a visually dazzling spectacle.
