Synopsis: Beau Wassermann (Joaquin Phoenix) is a mild-mannered but anxiety-ridden man who lives in a small apartment in New York City. He is estranged from his family and has no close friends. One day, he receives a phone call, that prompts a long odyssey of a journey to see his mother. Beau sets out on a journey across the country, but his trip is anything but smooth. He is plagued by nightmares and hallucinations, combined with the constant fear that he is being followed.
Review: Beau is Afraid is a wild ride from start to finish. Squeezing every drop from its indulgent 3 hour runtime, director Ari Aster has crafted a film that is equal parts funny, disturbing and thought-provoking. Joaquin Phoenix accepts the lofty responsibility of the lead by giving a powerful performance as a man who is slowly losing his grip on reality. The supporting cast is also excellent, with Amy Ryan and Parker Posey all playing memorable parts in this freakshow of an odyssey. The film is a visual feast, with stunning cinematography and production design. Pulling all of these elements together is the film’s score, which perfectly complements the film's off kilter tone. Safe to say that Beau is Afraid is not for everyone. It is a challenging film that will make you think, make you cringe and, if you get on board with its chaotic logic, make you laugh too.
