Synopsis: The film tells the story of Mr. Williams, a man who has spent his entire life avoiding any kind of emotional connection. But as he begins to face the reality of his own mortality, he finds himself drawn to a young woman named Ella. Their unlikely friendship forces Williams to confront the mistakes of his past and the possibility of a different future.
Review: Living is a poignant film that showcases the talents of both director Oliver Hermanus and star Billy Nighy. Nighy delivers a career-defining performance as an ageing man struggling to come to terms with his own mortality. Hermanus' direction is masterful, deftly balancing moments of humour and heartache to create a moving experience. Nighy is certainly brilliant in the role of Mr Williams, bringing depth and complexity to a character who could have easily been one-dimensional and stooped in grumpiness. Through each encounter we get a sense of Williams’ shifting perspective and the life that he could have led. His chemistry with co-star Aimee Lou Wood is electric, and their scenes together are some of the most emotionally resonant in the film. Living is above all a beautiful homage to Kirusowa’s original film and stands as a reminder that life is precious; that we should make the most of every moment.
