Synopsis: Nurse Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain) is shocked when her colleague Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne) is found guilty of killing dozens of patients across two states and nine hospitals without being prosecuted.
Review: The Good Nurse is an adequate retelling of a clinically cruel true crime story. With strong lead performances from Chastain and Redmayne, the film feels like a two-hander. The festering allegations that emerge give the two actors plenty of tension to work with, but sometimes this is squandered by the emptiness of scenes. Accusations are made, but the film tends to overestimate how surprising these revelations are; Charlie’s involvement is rather clear. However, instead of showing the aftermath of the arrest or taking a more cerebral approach to his character, the narrative meanders around the crimes until the truth unfurls. It's a rather flat viewing experience at times, but the prangs of violence that do appear are given a greater weight because of this subdued direction. In contrast to Redmayne's sometimes hyperbolic manner, Chastain captures the human aspects of her character. As the title suggests, it’s very much her film.
