Synopsis: Using Rare footage and intimate interviews, director Laura Poitras provides an insight into the life and work of renowned photographer and activist Nan Goldin.

Review: Laura Poitras’ documentary showcases the transcendental power that art continues to have in a capitalist society. Through the film’s exploration of Goldin’s upbringing in a troubled Washington home, her flourishing as a photographer, and her current efforts to fight OxyContin and big pharma, the film expertly illustrates Goldin’s determination to fight oppressive powers and stand up for the unspoken. Still slides and chapters are used liberally, but the pacing remains immaculate. With each mini-exhibition Poitras gives us, we gain a more intimate understanding of Goldin’s work — indeed, her life — and why the fight against the Sackler family is such a pressing one. The film transverses that familiar, but hard to execute, space between the cinema and the gallery; it is both a dynamic capsule of someone’s life and also a raw, presentation of iconoclastic art. Like its enigmatic title, this documentary is alluring in its vividness.
