Synopsis: Strange things are afoot at the Haywood family farm. Otis Senior (Keith David), Otis Junior (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald (Keke Palmer) have been running a successful horse business all their lives, when all of a sudden a bizarre catastrophe throws their livelihood into disarray. Fast forward one year later and that ‘bad miracle’ is about to be amplified as increasingly strange and terrifying events begin to take place.
Review: Both a love letter to alien, sci-fi films and an innovative take on modern horror, Jordan Peele’s return is an intriguing event. Intriguing in that so much of Nope is deftly wrapped up in enigmas, whether it’s an eerie back story involving Steven Yeun and a violent monkey or a shapeshifting force that haunts the night. In spite of these overlapping stories, the mood-switching feels frustratingly collected for a Peele flick, with more horror than comedy this time round. That being said, the sheer hilarity of the ragtag central group, led by a brilliantly stern Daniel Kaluuya and excitable Keke Palmer, gives viewers plenty to revel in. Mirroring the hierarchies of a film crew, Nope also taps into the comradery of film production. If all this sounds like a lot then that’s probably a fair representation of the film’s strength; a refusal to settle for one mood, genre or tone.
