Directing duo “Daniels” new film is an assault on the conventional way we experience films, and the world in general. Utilising the concept of the multiverse — that there exists an almost innumerable amount of alternate universes — Everything centres around laundrette owner Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) and her battle against an evil force that threatens to destroy multiple worlds. Despite her responsibilities as the central character, Yeoh has equally emotive support from Stephanie Hsu and Key Huy Quan. With its outlandish set pieces and unique DIY special effects, the film is a triumph of filmmaking innovation. However, Everything lacks the pacing that would connect all these elements. The world-hopping narrative often seems like a gimmick used to create quirkiness. The Wang family is the emotional centre of the narrative, but viewers don't learn enough about their growing harmony until too late. Even then, it is veiled beneath layers of visual gags.
