Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Drive My Car may be one of the most contemplative films of 2021, as it captures a variety of human emotions with its understated filmmaking style. The film unfolds its plot in quiet, deliberate moments as the viewer travels from actor Yusuke's (Hidetoshi Nishijima), cosmopolitan married life to more natural settings in Hiroshima where he is enlisted to direct an adaptation of Chekov's Uncle Vanya. Yusuke, faced with grief and existential burdens of aging, forms a friendship with Misaki (Tรดko Miura). This bond develops becomes increasingly meaningful as these characters come to terms with their own lives. The time that Hamaguchi dedicates to this enveloping story is a testament to his commitment to presenting human fallibility; inside wide shots of nature, industry and roads, his characters find the safety to share their most personal experiences while, viewers’ are sure to find sanctuary in the genuinity of these interactions.
