Another cap in the feather of Stephen Graham, Boiling Point is a tour de force in acting and aesthetics. The film follows — in one, continuous tracking shot, no less — a night at a London restaurant as head chef Andy (Graham) juggles family issues, debts and rude customers. The film’s momentous energy, personified in one aside where a pot washer meanders out of the restaurant, draws similarities with the Safdie Brothers Uncut Gems. In both films, the directors emphasise the viewers’ defencelessness in the face of our protagonists’ increasingly disastrous choices. Although these decisions are, at times, predictable in Boiling Point, this doesn’t weaken our sympathies for those caught in its seething pot of drama. On this note, the supporting cast deserves much praise for their roles (Vinette Robinson as Sous Chef ‘Carly’ is superb); they never feel at service to Graham’s powerful performance but rather authenticate the film’s culinary setting.
