No Time to Die feels like a patchwork of great, but underdeveloped ideas. The film deals with trauma at its core, using flashbacks to switch between Bond (Daniel Craig) and Madeline's (LĂ©a Seydoux) struggle to navigate the horrors of the past and present. Much like these murky memories, Bond and Madeline's lack the chemistry to tie these loose ends together. Occupying an even less clear space is the film’s villain, Saryn (Remi Malek). His plans for biogenecide are, too, grounded in his own trauma, but the audience never receives a thesis statement that would explain these motives fully. In this vein, Fukunaga’s bond feels like a detour from the streamlined storytelling of Casino Royale and Skyfall. At such a pivotal point in the franchise, it’s hoped that the film’s innovations - new 00’s, secret agents and greater culpability for the MI5 - mark a new direction of diverse and inspired films to come.
