Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥
The latest reboot of The Invisible Man is dense, unfearingly tackling areas such as domestic abuse, gaslighting and obsessive masculinity. When Cecilia (Elizabeth Moss) escapes her controlling partner Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) only to discover that he has later committed suicide, she is sceptical that her abuse is over. Indeed, the torture is only just beginning for Cecilia, as she is drawn into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with a predator that she can't visualise. If this metaphor for the often 'hidden' nature of domestic abuse isn't vivid enough, then Celia's inability to convince anyone of her pain is a another damning feature that highlights the isolation of abuse. While there are sure performances from Aldis Hodge and Storm Reid as the Lanier's, a family who take in Cecilia, it is Moss who the camera sticks with and her exhaustive performance that carries the emotional weight of the film's horror.
