While it may be David Lynch's 74th birthday today, the acclaimed director has ensured that it is his devoted fans who will be enjoying the gift of a new project. And what better way to signal a return than a film about a potentially murderous monkey. The usual Lynchian tropes are all there, from animated language to the surrealist imagery. Lynch himself takes the role of the interrogator, hurling questions at the small primate as they engage in a verbal game of tennis, as they rally metaphors and animal puns at one another in the small annexe of a train station. Shot on black and white film and making great use of the shadows that occupy the room, it's hard to ignore the noir tinge to Lynch's latest work, which even delivers its own femme fatale in the wisecracking cafe worker who delivers Jack's coffee. Crime, craziness and absurdity ensue.
