Last Christmas delivers the usual Christmas festivities with easy-going jest. Co-star and writer Emma Thompson eagerly builds a humble family story beneath the frosty protagonist,  (Emilia Clarke), a Russian immigrant whose near-death operation has made her sceptical to Christmas and the possibility of happiness. When she meets Tom (Henry Golding), a mysterious but good-willed drifter, she slowly regains faith in the goodness of humanity. Throwaway laughs and sentimental music populate the duo's relationship, but it's all executed in good faith and sincerity. Whilst the film is largely shot through a tourist's lense of London, complete with cute parks and festive cheer, there are also glimpses into the city's failings, from xenophobic speech directed to Russian immigrants on the bus, to a look inside homeless shelters for those less fortunate. These tonal and spatial shifts aren't always the most subtle, but they maintain their charm throughout the feature.
