The Irishman was always destined for greatness from the moment when Robert DeNiro brought the book to I Heard You Paint Houses to director Martin Scorsese. The film channels a bygone era of gangster films through its all-star cast including Deniro as lead, Frank Sheeran, Al Pacino as union boss Jimmy Hoffa and Joe Pesci as gangster Russell Buffalino. Alongside the homage to Scorsese's filmography, The Irishman uses every second of its 210 minute running time to draw out the larger philosophical questions that are often overlooked in the crime drama. The collectively older cast infuses the violence and trauma of the film with a sense of poignancy that resonates right into Frank's elderly years in a retirement home.
