Director: James Grey
Writers: James Grey and Ethan Ross
Release Date: 18th September 2019
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥
From the first moment of conflict in Ad Astra, director James Grey propels his Sci-Fi odyssey on an ultra-tense journey of reflection and mystery, both of which centre around astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) and his long lost father, H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones). The intertwining narrative is given an edge of danger through father McBride's mission, which now threatens Earth through a series of electric storms. Pitt is a superbly noble astronaut whose bravery is often displayed as duty throughout a series of terrifying interactions. What remains after these moments of terror and beautifully-shot landscapes, however, is an altogether cold and distanced progression of drama. The level of intensity that Grey maintains in the film is impressive, yet is glazed by a drab range of characters, none of whom we fully get to empathise with because of their minimal screen time or insignificant role in the film.
