Director: Martin Scorsese
Release Date: 12th June 2019
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥
With his latest feature film, The Irishman, scheduled for a winter release this year, Martin Scorsese has kept himself busy with another music documentary. In many ways, however, Scorsese's latest tale, a recount of Bob Dylan's 'Rolling Thunder' tour in 1975, is more fantasy than fact. Instead of tracing Dylan's tour in a conventional and chronological manner, Scorsese draws on pseudo-witnesses to the tour as a way of recounting stories that relate to both Dylan and the posse that accompanied him during his shows. In doing so, the director distinguishes his work from other similar music docs whilst simultaneously upholding the creativity that continues to make Bob Dylan such a fascinating icon in American History. The use of previously unseen archival footage from the tour balances the fantastical elements of the film with a sense of realism and authenticity, which steadily conjures the songs toward a crescendo of political wit.
