'A Prayer Before Dawn' tells the brutal story of Billy Moore, an English boxer who is imprisoned in one of Thailand's most dangerous prisons. In an attempt to overcome his drug addiction and survive inside, Billy turns to Muay Thai, gaining him respect amongst the inmates. Joe Cole gives a stellar performance as Moore, as he slowly guides our allegiance throughout his turbulent time in his cramped prison cell. It is this same unstable journey that may sometimes alienate audiences, for we find ourselves continuously questioning Billy's choices. Nonetheless, while the film is physically violent, it is the emotional angst of our protagonist that is particularly emphasised through his misguided morals, a flaw which makes his rehabilitation all the more endearing. The film's pacing ensures that this story plays out in an honest manner, as director Sauvaire refuses to shy away from our leads violent but sincere means of survival.
