Director Dexter Fletcher returns with a new musical outing on the early life of Elton John (Taron Egerton). Rocketman possesses a necessary flair in its musical production and lavish costume design. More importantly, and unlike the comparatively vanilla moments of BoRhap, Elton's homosexuality is approached head on and with equal parts focus and sincerity. The pop star's platonic friendship with lyricist Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell), his damaging romance with manager John Reid (Richard Madden) and his estranged relationship with his parents are all portrayed as influences upon Elton's success but also the struggles that drove him to substance addiction. While the content is polished, the film often strays into predictable territory, with drawn-out scenes of Elton's childhood and an over-sensational approach to emotional trauma. Such imbalances are propped up by Egerton, who maintains the film's general success and feel-good momentum with his eager portrayal of the rocket man himself.
