Vox Lux - 💥💥💥

Hot Rating: 💥💥💥

Set in a digital age of music streaming, mass stardom yet, also increased terror attacks, Vox Lux feels strikingly contemporary. After surviving a school shooting, Celeste (Raffedy Cassidy) finds fame singing, assisted by her sister, Eleanor (Stacy Martin), and a nameless manager (Jude Law). Conflicted by success and criticism from American tabloids, the older Celeste (Natalie Portman) is on the brink of collapse. In his second feature, Brady Corbet gives audiences a bold vision of current music and, ultimately, the noughties stars that are troubled by its constant progressions. The performances are all strong, with Jude Law and Portman producing electric chemistry as the business relationship that borderlines seedy romance. Nevertheless, its near-two-hour runtime feels bloated by the artsy touring moments in Celeste's younger years. Naturally, some of these moments are significant, though, with Portman in full authority of her character, this segment should have taken centre stage.
