Director: Jeff Tremaine
Writer: Amanda Adelson and Rich Wilkes (screenplay); Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Vince Neil, Nicki Sixx and Neil Strauss (book)
Release Date: 22nd March 2019
Hot Rating: π₯π₯
The trailer for The Dirt promised everything one expects from a MΓΆtley CrΓΌe biopic, including raucous behaviour, copious amounts of drugs and the abrasive comradery that pervaded the band's reunion. The film delivers on these fronts, though the portrayal of these events is pitifully shot by the Jackass and Bad Grandpa director, Jeff Tremaine, who tells this story with a similar air of mindlessness. While this pays off during the crash course rise to fame of the 80s rockers, The Dirt runs tiresome after the hour mark, as Tremaine struggles to innovate the repeated tour sequences. By the time that the film demands audiences' sympathies, the drama seems cartoonish by comparison to Tommy Lee's failing marriage or Niki Sixx's heroin addiction. The sad irony of this biopic is that there is daftness and danger in all the band's antics, yet Tremaine can only visualise the latter in an inauthentic manner.
