Director Barry Jenkins returns with grace and style in his drama If Beale Street Could Talk, an adaptation of James Baldwin's 1974 novel of the same name. The story follows Alfonzo ('Fonny') and Tish, an African American couple whose life is in turmoil after Fonny is imprisoned for accusations of sexual assault. In early 70s New York, the prejudice surrounding this trial keeps Fonny locked away indefinitely. Jenkins iterates this reality through Tish's visits, where desperation is summarised by detailed close-ups. As Jenkins himself said in an interview with Little White Lies, "people of colour have been looking into the eyes of white people forever" yet, in Beale Street,  the director holds a mirror up to audiences and makes clear the injustices of the world we live in. From these picturesque visuals to the love shared between our two leads, the film's final note envisages a universal message of unity.
