Midway through Chang-dong Lee's Burning, witless protagonist Lee Jong-su (Ah-in Yoo) refers to Ben (Steven Yeun) as a 'Gatsby', comparing this mysterious figure to the bohemian of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby; this is one of many references that the film makes to Literature. Lee Jong-su is a budding writer fleeting between part-time work when he meets Haemi (Jong-seo Jun), an old friend from his neighbourhood. As the two rekindle a relationship, Haemie leaves for Africa and returns with our 'Gatsby', Ben. What ensues is a mystery inspecting the political landscape of South Korea, from its consumerist culture to the rich puppeteers that conceal these troubles. Such analyses unfold through Kyung-pyo Hong's camera work, which begins close-up and then opens onto the vast Pajuian borderlands. Even at its two and a half hour running time, Burning remains contained to its pressing themes whilst constantly giving you ideas to ponder.
