Ever the provocateur, Danish director Lars Von Trier marks his five-year absence with a difficult, gory and often senseless tale of a serial killer. Told in a pseudo-first person narration style, where our protagonist 'Jack' (Matt Dillon) is in discussion with a figure called 'Verge' (Bruno Ganz), the film follows 'five incidents' of murder. These visceral episodes are told in unison with Jack's attempted construction of a house, an activity that embodies his philosophical conflict between his career as an engineer and his love for architecture. This artistic debate is only one of the bombastic arguments that Von Trier sets up yet does not fully develop without relying on an act of sadistic violence. This isn't to say that the horror of Jack's acts is completely futile, but rather that it is too often used to masquerade as something deeper.  Unfortunately, the same can be said of the film itself.
