Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Writers: Alfonso Cuarón
Release Date: 14th December 2018
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥💥
There's no denying the sheer precision with which Alfonso Cuarón directs his camera in Roma. Stepping in as cinematographer, the director takes a locative approach by foregrounding the Mexico City scenery of his story and thus establishing citizens as an extension of their environment. The film follows a middle-class family's turbulent life set against the Dirty War and the frequent earthquakes that plagued the city in the early 70s. A fine-grained lens is set upon Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), an affectionate yet hard-done-by maid whose life is shocked by a pregnancy. The camera is constantly moving, yet our emotions remain firmly attached to the family's life, and all its drama. Cuarón's extensive worldbuilding means that every frame is bursting with musicality, lush imagery and frequent human interaction. It is, therefore, too reductive to single out a sole protagonist in a film which is so evidently a love letter to its omnipotent surroundings.
