'The Land of Steady Habits' is a provoking character study, adapted by Nicole Holofcener from Ted Thompson's novel of the same name. 'Steady Habits' uses a darkly comic script to play with audiences' emotions, in turn, avoiding the predictable formula of many Netflix originals. Ben Mendehlson is 'Anders Harris', a retired financer dealing with his divorce and estranged relationship with his son Preston (Thomas Mann), and family friend Charlie (Charlie Tahan). Mendehlson's drained expressions evoke Anders' divisive sexual energy and play on his unempathetic relationship with ex-wife Edie (Falco). At one point, Anders gives a convoluted analogy on his life as a 'series of webs' connecting him to those around him. Similarly, Nicole Holofcener uses a festive setting to underpin the narrative with the themes absent from the lives of our protagonists; forgiveness and family. It is this almost ironic connectivity that maintains our empathy throughout the film's turbulent moments.
