Gaspar Noé's 'Climax' is an exhausting affair, both in its narrative and its visuals. Unlike his previous drama 'Love' (2015), however, 'Climax' provides a focused sense of drama and dread. The film tells the (supposedly) true story of a 90s French dance team who are spiked with LSD during their tour rehearsals, a deranged tale that is intensified through Noé's trademark rotating camera movements. The film's electronic music is a fitting soundtrack to the treatment of dance as a visceral art form. As such, each character's passion for dance skews their journey in some form. Noé's renowned hallway shots and intense colour palette are evident early on, yet provide a perfect accompaniment to the intense psychedelic journey. It has been noted that the opening dance sequence was the only one that was choreographed, yet it is exactly this unprompted emotion that withholds our attention throughout the obscenities of the film.
