In his feature-film debut, director/writer Bart Layton reassess one of the most ambitious heists in American history, as he tells the story of four college students attempting to steal 12 million dollars worth of art. Layton cleverly draws on the real-life men behind the story to simultaneously guide the narrative alongside the film's four leads. This dual narration underpins the madness of the film with a recurring sense of reality and propels the film's intense last act into an altogether exhilarating account of the real-life events. While the film expectedly recollects some of the angst and double-crossing of the heist genre, the action never feels tiresome thanks to the self-assured work of the two main leads played by Barry Keoghan (Spencer) and Evan Peters (Warren). Both actors build personas that accentuate the personalities of the men they are portraying, thus creating the same overarching parallel between truth and fiction.
