While the recent influx of Netflix originals, particularly romantic comedies, are not renowned for their complexity, 'Set it Up' marks a new landmark for dumbed down 'easy watching' cinema. Right from the opening sequence, a seemingly irrelevant montage of a PA's intense routine, the film's crude brand of comedy is placed at the foreground of the narrative. Such explicit gags, almost entirely centred around sex or physical attraction, are rather appropriate for the film's shallow plot, which centred around two personal assistants, Harper (Zoey Deutsch) and Charlie, who attempt to matchmake their uptight bosses, Kirsten (Lucy Liu), and Rick (Taye Diggs). Despite the central focus of this acting quartet, no single character stands out as entertaining, but more irritating and unsympathetic. In the end, as we passively follow the trials and tribulations of these characters, the conclusion that we arrive at feels all the more uninspiring, if not ultimately predictable.
