'Mary Shelley' is a convincing portrayal of a legendary artist and her struggle to find her voice in a male-dominated literary world. Elle Fanning shows Shelley to be a mild-mannered, yet ultimately determined, writer, even if her portrayal is somewhat sheepish and withdrawn from the film's lavish emotions. A similar imbalance is evident in the film's darkly lit landscapes and abundance of tightly-packed frames. Where the drama is ripe and gushing with excessive dialogue and damaged male personas, it is a shame that the cinematography does not supplement these passionate features. These cluttered environments result in a laborious middle act which, despite the dominating presence of Tom Gutteridge as Lord Byron, adds little to the film's overtones of independence and virtue. As such, while the ending leaves little to resonate with audiences, this final act is a flourish, as Shelley and her monstrous work 'Frankenstein', really do come to life.
