'Cargo' takes an innovative approach to the zombie horror genre. The first-time directors Ben Holand and Yolanda Ramke put their own stamp on the film by foregrounding our two protagonists, Andy (Martin Freeman) and Thoomi (Simone Landers), over the zombies themselves. As such, this unconventional relationship between a widowed father and an orphaned aboriginal child blossoms throughout the film's plot. Unfortunately, this escapade can sometimes feel tiresome and often distracts from the film's tension. Nonetheless, the character-driven direction of the film underpins the narrative with a humility that is not often found in horror films. Moreover, the distance between the white Australian characters and the native Aboriginal people supplements the film's ecological dystopia with a political commentary on the ignorance toward contemporary environmental issues. Thus, 'Cargo' may sometimes feel like a slog, but audiences' patience is rewarded with a poignant conclusion where, in the faith of mass extinction, humanity prevails.
