For all its brutality 'You Were Never Really Here' is ultimately an in-depth character study on the effects of trauma. At the heart of this examination is 'Joe' (Joaquin Pheonix), a man-for-hire set out to find a senator's missing daughter. From this endeavour, Joe's journey takes continuously troublesome turns, which prove increasingly detrimental to his fragile psyche. The film occasionally self-indulges in its genre-bending qualities and misses out on fully executing its intensity, yet this issue is generally overlooked thanks to Joaquin Pheonix's mesmerising acting. Likewise, Johnny Greenwood's outstanding soundtrack brings the film's rugged landscapes to life. Director Lynne Ramsay, as she has proven in her previous works, is a master of tying these cinematic features together; her latest work is no exception. From jelly beans to plastic bags, Ramsay interweaves the smallest details together to conjure up a film which, at a finely tuned pace, keeps its audiences intrigued.
