In his feature-film debut, Damien Chazelle exposes the obsessive traits that many musicians develop at the hands of fierce tuition. The respective roles of teacher and student are filled by the characters of Andrew (Miles Teller) and Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), who possess a venomous chemistry. In accordance with Andrew's desire to perfect his drumming, the relationship between these leads begins to pervade all aspects of our protagonist's life. The verbal daggers tossed between the characters reflects Chazelle's nack for efficient screenwriting, as the director's previous work on 'Grand Piano' (2010) shines through in every on-screen argument. This verbal intensity is accommodated through the film's dark and brooding colour palette. As such, every drumbeat is synced with the same aggression as Fletcher's (J.K. Simmons) dialogue. In turn, 'Whiplash' is a masterclass of editing and screenwriting, a combination which foregrounds the film's moral questions on the all-consuming nature of art.

In a tonal shift from the intensity of his debut feature, 'Whiplash' (2014), Damien Chazelle tells an enchanting love story of two hopeless romantics caught up in their dreams of being a jazz pianist and an actress. While audience members are certainly familiar with this romantic plot, 'La La Land' innovates this genre through classy visuals and a finely-tuned soundtrack. As the film matures across its two-hour running time, so does this soundtrack move from traditional jazz and musical theatre, to acid jazz and intimate ballads. In turn, the emotional developments of Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) are beautifully portrayed through the songs they perform or, more precisely, the music that allows them to fulfil their respective dreams. While this journey takes some lengthened twists and turns, the heartfelt lead performances from Gosling and Stone ensure that audiences are happy to listen to every note that rings throughout.
