Director: Taika Waititi
Writers: Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost
Release Date: 24th October 2017
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥
After picking up interest from critics, New Zealand-born director Taika Waititi was a suitable selection for directing a blockbuster. However, despite the comic tendencies of the Marvel franchise, Waititi's own brand of bombastic comedy and mockumentary aesthetics sparked some anxiety in fans of the previous instalments of the Thor trilogy. Unlike these two, more conventional adaptations of the god of thunder (Chris Hemsworth) Waititi's film almost acts as a foil, with the director's slapstick supplementing the action of the plot with visuals that are both intense and humorous. Furthermore, Waititi is to be admired for his ability to transcend his conventionally low-budget filmmaking style and conjure an action flick that stays true to his communal themes. Of these thematics, Waititi's foregrounding of Thor and Loki's (Tom Hiddleston) relationship is a mouthpiece for the underlying mantra; only by accepting the humility of Asgard's people can Thor save his community from destruction.
