'The Outsider' is an action drama telling the story of Nick (Jared Leto), an American turned Yakuza after saving the life of one of its members during his time in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. Despite being set post-WWII, 'The Outsider' feels jarred of a conventional time frame, with Nick's initiation and subsequent duties for the Yakuza being squashed into what feels like a period of less than a few weeks. Director Martin Zandvliet tries to navigate this journey with intermissions of murder and betrayal, yet these attempts to instigate intensity in the audience is lost in the film's dull tone. Furthermore, despite the efforts of Leto to embody his newfound culture, his character of Nick feels equally clueless to his environment as audiences do come the film's conclusion. In this latter section of the narrative, the mismatches of the film accumulate to form a frustrating 'equilibrium', as we try to realign our sympathies with a protagonist whose only real charm is his loyalty.
