In his recent adaptation of Jason Matthews' spy thriller, 'Red Sparrow', director Francis Lawrence collaborates again with lead Jennifer Lawrence (Dominika Egorova). The two had previously worked together on the three latest 'Hunger Games' films which, much like 'Red Sparrow', are centred on a desperate Jennifer Lawrence battling against higher powers in scenes of action. In this conflict, the film ramps up its violence, both sexual and physical, to alienating effects. Such brutality is expectedly repulsive in some of the torture scenes and continually exceeds the sleek progression through Dominika's training. By nature of the wider purpose of these moments in the plot, the film broodingly confines itself to a dark mood, with consequently little room for fun. Reassuringly, Lawrence deals with the film's dark themes confidently, yet these attributes gloss the narrative with a nastiness so potent that it is hard to emotionally align ourselves with its central characters.
