'I, Tonya' is both a sports biopic and a social commentary on the American media's demonisation of a disgraced ice skater, Tonya Harding. These two focuses of the film are, for the most part, well-handled by the director, Craig Gillespie, who uses the claustrophobic internal spaces of Tonya's Oregon home to reflect her difficult personal life. Such a sympathetic portrait of the ex-Olympian is made believable through the stellar lead performances of Margot Robbie (Tonya Harding) and Sebastian Stan (Jeff Gillooly), who have a toxic on-screen chemistry reflective of their relationship. Alongside Allison Janney, who stuns as Tonya's forceful mother, the film is a trifecta of pathos. However, the aesthetic of the interview sections, complete with time frames and 35mm grain, sometimes distract from these performances. Likewise, the tonal shifts that accompany these interviews often contradict the film's concerns, as we sometimes find ourselves stuck between comedy and domestic tragedy.
