Of the Superbowl's star-studded half-time advertisements, the third instalment of the shifting 'Cloverfield' franchise was perhaps the most bemusing. From the success of its 'found footage' sci-fi source, 'Cloverfield' (Matt Reeves), and accompanying thriller sequel (Dan Trachtberg, 2016), this extension refocuses the story as a prequel to Reeves's 2008 movie. While I may be over-divulging in a spoiler of sorts by confirming this narrative strand, this is the only element of the film that resonated with me. The accompanying space horror of the its plot is mostly forgettable, with the increasingly rushed deaths of the crew serving as a reflection of the thrills that the screenplay fails to fully develop. Above all, the ensemble cast, which might have once appeared promising through the features of Daniel Bruhl (Inglorious Basterds) and David Oyelowo (Selma), lacks genuine chemistry, and instead appears more as a B-grade version of the crew from Alien's Nostromo.
