Acclaimed Irish director and screenwriter Martin McDonagh truly outdoes himself in his latest, darkly comic drama 'Three Billboards'. With his largest budget yet, McDonagh navigates the various ethicalities of the protagonist, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand), on her warpath to discover her daughter's killer. With supporting roles from Woody Harrelson and the particularly bold Sam Rockwell, the film is a tour de force of human morality. It is visually accessible, with a repertoire of controlled establishing scenery, and juxtaposing handheld shots. However, so does this balance between the calm and the crazy exhibit the film's sometimes excessive tonal shifts. As much the same of McDonagh's last comic exercise, 'Seven Psychopaths' (2011), these increasing shifts prove demanding on audience members, somewhat challenging their own empathies in the film's concise conclusion. Nonetheless, like the three signposts that persist the madness of the film, so does its narrative persevere with continual action and excitement.
