Rarely can a director producing disturbing cinema can be so controlling of their obscenities. Yorgos Lanthimos ('Dogtooth') is one of these rarities, with his last feature, 'The Lobster' (2015), showing the Greek auteur at the height of his creative powers, producing an absurdist romance which was both challenging and humorous. In 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer', Lanthimos modernises the Greek tragedy, 'Iphigenia in Aulis'. The central figures of these narratives, Agamemnon and Dr James Murphy (Colin Farrell), must sacrifice a family member, a repercussion of a life choice from the past. With allusions to Edward Hopper (cinematography by Thimios Bakatakis), the aesthetics remain polished in their bloodiness. This cruelty, wrapped in a rigid screenplay, makes for an exhausting affair. The wicked support from Barry Keoghan (Martin) further cripples audiences searching for salvation. Though glimpses remain of Lanthimos talent for thematic balance, his film exchanges constructive brutality for pure sadism.
